Narayana Health, Howrah has set a new benchmark in medical excellence by successfully performing a highly complex arm replantation surgery on a 37-year-old factory worker. The patient had suffered a severe accident while operating machinery, which resulted in the traumatic amputation of his left arm above the elbow.
The patient, who arrived in shock approximately 2–3 hours after the accident, had lost a significant amount of blood. Upon arrival, the Emergency Department quickly stabilized his critical condition. The severed arm, which was covered in soot and grease from the accident, was cleaned and preserved in a refrigerator while preparations for surgery were made.
Once the patient’s condition was optimized, an expert surgical team led by Dr. Aditya Kanoi, Consultant Plastic and Microvascular Surgeonat Narayana Health, Howrah & Chunavati, undertook the intricate task of reattaching the amputated limb. The surgery, which lasted an intense 8 hours, involved a sequential and systematic approach to reconnecting the arm’s vital structures.
The team first focused on removing all damaged tissue from both the amputation stump and the severed arm. Following this, the injuries were evaluated for feasibility of replantation. Once it was determined that the arm could be replanted, they meticulously reattached the arm’s components, including the bones, arteries, veins, nerves, muscles, tendons, and skin. Subsequentprocedures were carried out to repair severed nerves and ensure proper wound closure.
Post-surgery, the condition of the patient and the replanted arm were closely monitored along with comprehensive ICU care, which included among others, blood transfusions, daily wound dressings, and psychological counseling to address the trauma associated with the accident. Once the surgical wounds healed and the bones were united, physiotherapy was initiated to facilitate recovery and restore mobility.
Reflecting on the achievement, Dr. Aditya Kanoi stated, “This surgery highlights the advancements in microvascular reconstructive techniques and the resilience of the human spirit. We are optimistic that, with continued rehabilitation, the patient will regain significant functionality in his arm.”
Mr. Tapani Ghosh, Facility Director of Narayana Health, Howrah, remarked, “This case stands as a profound example of the extraordinary capabilities of modern medicine. From the harrowing moment the patient arrived at our hospital to witnessing his progress today, this journey has been both challenging and inspiring. The team’s relentless efforts, combined with the patient’s willpower, have turned a near-tragic accident into a story of hope and recovery. At Narayana Health, Howrah, we are proud to be at the forefront of delivering advanced medical care that truly transforms lives.”
The patient’s determination and resilience have been instrumental in his recovery, although his journey to full rehabilitation continues. Narayana Health, Howrah remains steadfast in supporting his progress and helping him reclaim his life.
