Vivacity Multispecialty Hospital, a unit of Nephro Care India Limited (NCIL), successfully conducted Endoscopic Discectomy, a minimally invasive spine surgery on a 28-year-old female patient. The high-end procedure was conducted under the able supervision and guidance of Dr Chinmoy Nath, senior orthopaedic and spine surgeon.
Endoscopic Discectomy, which is conducted to repair or remove a herniated disc, is considered to be a safer and effective alternative to open spine surgery and microdiscectomy. The high-end procedure would help patients suffering from chronic renal problems and other serious ailments by bypassing the need for open spine surgery and by enabling faster recovery. What makes it more significant is the fact that the procedure was conducted at a hospital situated on the outskirts of the city at Madhyamgram in the North 24 Paraganas district of West Bengal.
The 28-year-old patient had been suffering from low back for the past one year and also had pain, numbness, mild weakness and tingling sensation on her right leg. When conservative treatment including medicines, physiotherapy and exercise were not able to provide any relief, Dr Nath recommended endoscopic discectomy as the patient was looking for a treatment with a quick turnaround time so that she could resume her work quickly.
“Endoscopic Discectomy is a highly specialised and effective procedure for treatment of slipped disc. It is minimally invasive as it entails very little bone and tissue removal, post operative pain is lesser as compared to open spine surgery hence a patient can bounce back to normalcy quicker this also leads to reduced length of stay in the hospital thereby bringing down the cost to a great extent. Vivacity Multispecialty Hospital is very well equipped with state-of-art modern operation theatre to conduct such high-end procedure. The patient was discharged on stable hemodynamic condition,” Dr Chinmoy Nath said.
Since, the post operative pain is lesser and recovery is faster, the need for medicines is far lower as compared to an open spine surgery, he pointed out.
Slip disc or herniated disc is considered to be a common problem in India, affecting around 2 per cent of the population annually. Sedentary lifestyle, obesity and stress are key contributors to the increasing prevalence of the disease. While a majority of the cases can be addressed by adopting conservative treatment such as medicines and physiotherapy, close to 20-25 per cent of the cases require surgical interventions, Dr Nath said.
“Earlier open surgery was practised for treating this condition and then came microdiscectomy. Endoscopic discectomy is a latest and more advanced procedure and is also minimally invasive. It calls for special expertise on the part of practitioner and a well equipped and modern hospital to carry out the procedure,” he said.
