The 44th Annual Meeting of the Indian Association for Cancer Research (IACR) and the International Conference on “Convergence of Fundamental and Translational Approaches in Cancer Theranostics” was inaugurated today at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Kolkata.

According to World Health organization (WHO), in every five people of the world, one is cancer patient. As per their one of the research, 20 million new cancer cases have been established in the year 2022, on the other hand 53.5 million were cancer survivor of five years in that year. In the world, lung cancer is in the first position, 2.5 million new cases of lung cancer have been established in every year where the next places are of breast cancer (2.3 million), colorectal cancer (1.9 million) and Prostate cancer (1.5million). In our country in 2023 the new cancer cases were1496972. In India, oral cancer, lungs and esophagus are the highest positions in the mail patients where breast, cervix and ovarian cancers are the respectively highest cases in female cancer patients.

In this respect this prestigious international conference focuses on discussions surrounding novel drugs and advancements in immunotherapy for cancer treatment. Scientists from premier cancer research institutes across India, including ACTREC Navi Mumbai, IISc Bengaluru, NII New Delhi, AIIMS New Delhi, NIBMG Kalyani, IISER Bhopal, and other leading universities and institutes are participating. Additionally, renowned Non-Resident Indian scientists from the USA are also attending, contributing to the global dialogue on cancer research.
Key topics at the conference include developments in genomics, precision medicine, and the application of artificial intelligence in cancer research and therapy. These discussions aim to pave the way for future advancements in cancer treatment.

The event has attracted around 350 scientists and young researchers from different parts of India. Prominent pharmaceutical companies and organizations specializing in artificial intelligence and computation are supporting the conference, underscoring the importance of industry-academia collaboration in advancing cancer research.
This event is the part of annual event of the Indian Association for Cancer Research, one of the nation’s premier cancer research societies, organized by the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI), in collaboration with the West Bengal Chapter of IACR, which represents 10 institutions and universities across the state.
A highlight of the conference was the conferral of the prestigious M.G. Deo Oration Award to Prof. Sharmila Bapat, a leading cancer biologist and Director-in-Charge of NCCS, Pune, for her outstanding contributions to cancer research.
The conference features 12 scientific sessions and two panel discussions, spotlighting the latest trends in cancer research and treatment. To inspire and recognize young researchers, several awards will also be presented during the event.
