Dum Dum BratyaJon’s completed 9 years with celebrating their latest play “Purono Trunk” that Captivates Kolkata

Dum Dum BratyaJon triumphantly concluded the staging of Purono Trunk, a poignant new play by Hon’ble Shri Bratya Basu, the Education Minister of West Bengal, Directed by Abhi Chakraborty and complete idea by Pradip Mazumder at the historic Academy of Fine Arts. The premiere drew a culturally enriched audience and featured the esteemed presence of theatre luminaries Debshankar Halder, Eminent Theatre personality, Shri Soumitra Mitra, Director of Purba Paschim, and renowned playwright Shri Ujjwal Chattopadhyay, lending gravitas to the evening’s proceedings.
Through vividly surreal dialogues between memory and the everyday, the production wove themes of nostalgia, identity, and emotional resonance, following the journey of a young protagonist connecting with his past. It seamlessly blended heartfelt realism with moments of dreamlike poeticism, reminiscent of Basu’s signature theatrical voice. Running about 65 minutes, the play maintained a taut and compelling narrative pace, earning enthusiastic applause and positive critical response.
“Purono Trunk is a play from a child’s heart – made for kids, but adults will enjoy it just as much,” said Bratya Basu himself. Shri Soumitra Mitra, Director of Purba Paschim and a veteran theatre stalwart, reflected on the evening by, “Purono Trunk transports you into a dreamscape of emotions. Bratya captures the delicate balance between personal memory and universal truth with unmatched sensitivity.” Also Shri Ujjwal Chattopadhyay, celebrated Bengali playwright, observed “This play is an evocative mirror to our collective consciousness. Bratya Basu’s vision resonates beyond the stage-melding art, introspection, and social commentary in one powerful narrative.”
Adding to the formal ambience of the evening, eminent theatre personality Mr Goutam Mukhopadhyay was felicitated by young and talented director Rakesh Ghosh, recognizing his lifelong contributions to Bengali theatre.
The event was graced by these theatre luminaries, underscored Dum Dum BratyaJon’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of contemporary Bengali theatre. Within a crisp 65-minute runtime, the production wove together poetic realism and subtle socio-political commentary, earning a standing ovation from the packed hall.
