The long-awaited return of Silajit Ghosh unfolded as he unveiled ‘The Quest Within’, a powerful exhibition and book launch of his artwork after a 21-year hiatus. The show, which explored the depths of the artist’s introspection and personal evolution, was inaugurated on Thursday, 14th November 2024 at The Harrington Street Art Centre. The event was graced by distinguished guests including H.E. Didier Talpain, French Consul General of Kolkata; Atri Bhattacharya, IAS; Nazeeb Arif, Executive Vice President of ITC Limited; and Chhatrapati Dutta, Painter and Principal at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata.

The exhibition was originally scheduled to open to the public from 15th to 17th November. However, during the inauguration, the organiser announced an extension by an additional week, with daily viewings from 12 pm – 8 pm, marking the culmination of Silajit Ghosh’s introspective journey. ‘The Quest Within’ unfolds as a narrative of self-discovery, transforming years of silent reflection into profound artistic expression.

This exhibit unveils Ghosh’s journey after a 21-year silence, during which he refrained from showcasing his work to cultivate something profoundly new. His collection, divided into seven distinct series, explores multiple dimensions of the human experience. The ‘Primitive’ series captures the essence of simplicity and raw expression. In contrast, ‘Frenetic Dance’ explores the chaotic beauty of life, with vibrant colours and energetic movements that seem to dance across the canvas. His introspective side is revealed in the ‘Memoir’ series, which uses calendars as a medium to reflect the mutable nature of memory. In ‘Alchemy’, he challenges traditional power dynamics by using gold and black to create transformative imagery. The ‘Wounds’ series, perhaps his most intimate, lays bare his scars, transforming them into a narrative of healing and resilience.

Reflecting his journey, Silajit Ghosh, said, “After two decades of silence, I am finally able to share this journey—an exploration of not just my depths but of the universal search for meaning that defines us all. ‘The Quest Within’ is a reflection of these years of introspection, transformation and rediscovery. I hope that viewers find a piece of themselves within this narrative, embracing their own journeys of self-discovery.”

Organiser praised the exhibition, noting, “The journey Silajit presents in ‘The Quest Within’ transcends the personal, touching something deeply universal. His evolution as an artist brings forth a powerful narrative of self-awareness, reflection and growth. This exhibition invites viewers to confront their vulnerabilities and transformations, making it a truly immersive and introspective experience.”
