In a significant advancement for orthopaedic care in Eastern India, Narayana Hospital, Howrah, has become the first hospital in West Bengal and eastern India to successfully perform Stemless Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA), marking a major milestone in joint replacement surgery in the region. This innovative, bone-preserving shoulder replacement surgery was performed by Dr. Vivek Sharma, Consultant – Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement Surgery, Narayana Hospital, Howrah, marking a milestone in joint care and minimally invasive orthopaedic procedures in the region.
Stemless TSA is a cutting-edge surgical technique that replaces the damaged shoulder joint without using a traditional long stem in the upper arm bone. Instead, the implant is fixed directly to the metaphyseal bone using screws, minimising bone removal and making future revision surgeries easier if needed. It offers better adaptability for patients with complex shoulder issues such as post-traumatic arthritis or previous implants.
The patient, Ameena Khatun, had been suffering from severe pain and restricted shoulder movement due to advanced avascular necrosis (grade 4). Traditional activities like lifting a glass of water had become painful. After thorough evaluation with X-rays and a 3D CT scan, the team opted for a stemless shoulder replacement. The surgery involved minimal bone cutting, reduced blood loss, and secure implant fixation using a single screw at a 132° angle. In her third postoperative week, the patient had regained significant mobility in her right shoulder and resumed light daily activities.
“This technique represents a new chapter in shoulder joint preservation. It not only allows faster recovery and better bone preservation but is also ideal for patients with strong bone quality who may need revision surgery in the future,” said Dr. Vivek Sharma. “Our goal is always to provide advanced, patient-friendly solutions, and this is a step forward in that direction.”
Mr. Tapani Ghosh, Facility Director, Narayana Hospital, Howrah & Chunavati, said, “This milestone reflects our commitment to bringing world-class innovations to Eastern India. We aim to restore mobility and enhance lives through advanced, patient-focused care.”
This landmark surgery underscores Narayana Hospital, Howrah’s dedication to introducing globally advanced orthopaedic solutions in Eastern India. By leading the way in procedures like stemless shoulder arthroplasty, the hospital continues to elevate the benchmark for patient care—delivering faster recovery, enhanced outcomes, and world-class treatment within reach for the people of West Bengal.
