The Archbishop of Calcutta, His Excellency, Thomas D’Souza today unveiled the `Jubilee Year Door’ in the presence of Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary in Burrabazar Kolkata (aka Portuguese Church) during a Christmas Eve function on Sunday. The 12 by 8 feet door, based on the theme of Annunciation, is in keeping with Pope Francis’ recent announcement that Church will celebrate a Jubilee Year in 2025 with the theme of “Pilgrims of Hope”. The Archbishop of Calcutta, His Excellency, Thomas D’Souza, Fr Franklin Menezes, Pro-Vicar of The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary, would be present at the function along with other devotees and dignitaries.

Pope Francis has urged the Catholics to prepare for the Jubilee by spending time in studying the four Constitutions of the Second Vatican Council. The idea to use the theme of Annunciation – Virgin Mary’s divine conception of Jesus Christ – in the form of reliefs on the bronze-coloured Door finish has been conceptualized and executed by a young student Parthabrata Ganguly of Church Art, a Kolkata-based creative firm that specialises in creating sacred and esoteric art work in compliance with the canonical laws.

“In times marked by conflicts and violence, the significance of a Jubilee Year Holy Door takes on an even more profound meaning. It stands as a symbol of hope, reconciliation, mercy and peace amidst turmoil,” said Fr Franklin Menezes, Pro-Vicar of The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary.

The Holy Door represents reconciliation and forgiveness in the face of wars and hate; it reminds us of the importance of healing wounds and fostering understanding among conflicting parties. The Holy Door serves as a threshold to divine mercy and compassion. It invites individuals and communities to seek solace, forgiveness, and grace, regardless of the surrounding turmoil. The Door also calls for unity and solidarity and signifies an opportunity for personal and communal renewal. It invites us to leave behind hatred and discord, embracing a transformative journey towards love, understanding, and reconciliation.
