Bougainvillea Café & Bistro, the much-anticipated new café near South City Mall, officially opened its doors today, welcoming guests in a celebratory launch attended by prominent figures from Kolkata’s food and lifestyle community.
The café is the brainchild of co-owners and longtime friends Sumona Basu and Somnath Sarkar. Sumona Basu, who is also the co-owner of the beloved Calcutta Nostalgia restaurant, brings with her a rich understanding of Kolkata’s dining culture. Together, Sumona and Somnath have created a space that reflects their personal stories — named after a flower that blooms resiliently, unapologetically, on its own terms.
The launch event was graced by notable food influencers Saswata Duttaray and Bijoy Sarkar, among other guests, marking the occasion as a significant moment in Kolkata’s evolving café culture.
Sumona and Somnath explained; “the name comes from a place of personal stories – chapters of our own lives reflected in a plant that grows in spite of everything, and blooms all the brighter for it.”
Bougainvillea Café & Bistro has been designed to exude warmth rather than grandeur — an elegance that welcomes rather than intimidates. The space features real bougainvillea plants framing the entrance, lifelike floral accents inside, and a sweeping mural of the iconic vine as its centrepiece. Warm lighting transforms every corner into an inviting retreat.
The menu at Bougainvillea is a confident and wide-ranging offering — burgers and sandwiches sit alongside oriental and continental dishes. The coffee selection spans a classic espresso to a Saffron Coffee Blend and an Espresso Sunset mocktail. The continental section is equally bold, featuring dishes such as Veg Stroganoff and Fish Diana. All dishes are served on plain white plates, letting the food speak entirely for itself.
Bougainvillea Café & Bistro is located near South City Mall, Kolkata, and is open daily from 12:00 PM to 10:30 PM. The café is co-owned by Sumona Basu and Somnath Sarkar, and serves a multi-cuisine menu spanning Continental, Oriental, and Café Classics.
