Popular Indian author and screenwriter, Anand Neelakantan launched his new book, ‘Many Ramayanas, Many Lessons’ on the 2nd day of Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2025. The book was unveiled in presence of Chief Guest, M.K. Raina, who then moderated a thoughtful session with the author. “Many Ramayanas, Many Lessons” explores the evolution of the Ramayana epic, examining its various versions across time. The book is a compilation of many Ramayana stories that the author, Anand Neelakanthan encountered in his journey and which formed the basis of so many of his books like Asura, Vanara, Valmiki’s women and shows like Siya Ke Ram, Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanuman and Srimad Ramayan. It’s ideal for those interested in the Ramayana’s history and the changing mindset across time.

While speaking to MK Raina on why he chose to write about Ramayana, despite the already existing vast literature, he said, “My book is drawing from folk tales across India passed down through oral traditions. My work brings out the diversity of the Ramayana and reflects his ongoing exploration of various perspectives on this epic. The Ramayana, having been translated throughout the ages, is not just a religious text but a cultural one. The purpose of this book is to provoke debate and discussion—an integral part of Indian culture.” He also highlighted the contradiction between the portrayal of the Ramayana on television and the richness found in the book. He emphasized that India’s tradition has always been inclusive. The Ramayana, as a cultural text, needs to be told in a way that resonates with everyone from various walks of life.

While speaking on the shrink in the importance of Sita in modern interpretations of the Ramayana, he detailed how in traditional India, Ram without Sita was considered inauspicious. He also presented his views on Sita as the epitome of feminism, representing strength and resilience. He also discussed his upcoming books, including Many Krishnas and Devi & Mahishasura, and his ongoing TV and film work, particularly focused on Karna.
