Eveready Industries India Ltd., the country’s leading battery and flashlight brand, today announced that its manufacturing facility, The Eveready Flashlight Company (TEFCO), has received the prestigious Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification. The company’s Lucknow unit, one of the oldest and largest torch manufacturing plants in the country, was presented with the esteemed recognition for its manufacturing prowess and steadfast commitment to quality and excellence.

The Indian flashlight industry has been witnessing an influx of unorganised players that have been selling products through informal distribution channels. These torches lack BIS certification and basic legal metrology requirements like Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on the packaging. The technical claims also tend to be unverified and inflated, hence misleading.

Given the prevailing scenario, the BIS certification in the flashlight industry will now guarantee that buyers are only offered products that are rigorously tested for quality and efficiency thereby significantly enhancing consumer trust in the category. While promoting standardization, homogeneity, and encouraging fair competition, the certification will make sure that the flashlight industry meets India’s strict safety and performance standards, safeguarding the interest of domestic manufacturers as well.

Mr. Anirban Banerjee, Chief Executive Officer, Eveready Industries India Ltd., said, “As India’s No.1 Flashlight brand, we are extremely proud to receive the coveted BIS certification for our Lucknow facility. As a market leader in the flashlight space, Eveready’s range of offerings was already fully compliant with all stringent quality standards, offering consumers value, and safety, as well as transparency. This certification is testament to our dedication to building consumer trust and reiterates our commitment to quality excellence.”

Eveready has long been considered a hallmark of quality in the Indian flashlight space. Thus, the company’s TEFCO facility, which already houses a National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)-accredited laboratory, has emerged as one of the leading flashlight manufacturing factories where BIS has been implemented. As part of the quality certification process, the company’s products are thoroughly tested at NABL-accredited labs, further validating and reinforcing the reliability and high quality of the company’s flashlights and torches.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Arun Kumar Sahay, Senior Vice President & Head – Operations, Eveready Industries India Ltd., said, “It is a matter of great pride to earn the BIS-certification in the flashlight category. This milestone is a reflection of our steadfast commitment to manufacturing products that promise quality, safety, and our adherence to the highest industry standards.”

Following the certification, Eveready’s BIS-certified flashlights and torches will feature the official Indian Standards Institute (ISI) mark and Central Mark License (CML) number on the product packaging.

The BIS certification plays a crucial role in ensuring that products manufactured across categories are safe, reliable, and comply with the highest standard of quality. In the recent past, the government has introduced BIS certification for footwear, chemicals, consumer electronics and packaging textiles, to name a few.

The TEFCO plant manufactures Eveready’s LED flashlights, rechargeable lanterns, and a wide range of other lighting products and other products. The foundation stone of Eveready’s TEFCO plant in Lucknow was laid on July 5, 1956, and it was inaugurated in 1958 by Mr. V.V. Giri, the then Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Since then, the plant has been central to Eveready’s growth and success.
