Director Nandan Ghosh’s film Get Up Kingshuk was recently released in theatres in Kolkata. The film is presented by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee.
The story of the film is about Kingshuk, a man who hails from an upper-middle-class family in a small town in Bengal. He works in Kolkata. His trouble in life starts when he finds difficulty in his sleep cycle. He is unable to go to sleep early and rise early the next morning. This leads to an inferiority complex that plagues his happy life.
Director Nandan Ghosh’s earlier films were Postmaster (2018), The Shuffler (2018), and Gram (2019). The director said that he found out that sleeplessness is not his only problem. This is experienced by many others in the world. The film has been shot on Sundays. “We are from different professions. Hence, we did not get the time to shoot it on weekdays like regular films. After we shot the film, the next challenge was to find affordable studios for editing and other jobs. However, the greatest compliment was when my mentors Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee praised the film and asked me to release it in theatres only,” said the director.
The cast of the film consists of Shahir Raj (Kingshuk), Anutorsha Mukhopadhyay (Jay), Sandipan Tapader (Raja), Arup Kar (Boss), and Kaushik Mondal (Pritam).
Shahir Raj said, “I am very much similar to the character of Kingshuk. I also cannot go to sleep early and get up early. This is my 14th released film. We shot the film four years ago, and this is an independent film. So we all had a tough time completing this film. But the houseful board is giving us great happiness”.
Bhagyashree said, “I have been doing theatre for a long time now. I started doing this in class six. It stopped during lockdown. However, after the lockdown, the director contacted me. I was surprised that he wanted to cast me in a role. We did not know whether the film was made well. When Shibu da and Nandita di praised the film and asked us to release it in theatres, we understood that we had done a decent job”. The music of the film has been composed by Anurag Dasgupta and Rupak Hore.
Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee said that their production house Windows, likes to give chances to talented newcomers. And presenting this film was their way of supporting a new director. The director duo was also surprised when they learned that the film had been shot on Sundays. The passion of the team was what impressed the directors the most.
The producers of the film are Sangita Ghosh and Dipanwita Das. Get Up Kingshuk was screened under the Bengali Panorama section at the 31st KIFF. The film is 78 minutes long.
