The enduring mystery surrounding the disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose has inspired a new historical feature film, The Bose Files — Sach Ya Sazish. The film received a special screening at Nandan, Kolkata, on October 13, bringing its exploration of one of India’s most debated historical episodes before an audience in the city.

Produced by Real Reels Production and directed by Rajesh Gupta, an IIT alumnus, the film examines the circumstances surrounding Netaji’s disappearance and the widely reported account of his death in a plane crash in 1945. Through a narrative combining historical documents, witness accounts and competing interpretations, the production revisits questions that have continued to attract public attention for decades.

Rather than presenting the subject merely as a retelling of familiar events, the film adopts an investigative approach to the conflicting accounts and controversies associated with Netaji’s fate. Allegations concerning the withholding of information and the possible involvement of government institutions and intelligence agencies also form part of its narrative. These elements reflect the film’s investigative perspective and are not, by themselves, proof of the allegations presented.

A prominent ensemble cast
The film features Yatin Karyekar as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, with Amit Behl portraying an Intelligence Bureau officer. Other actors appearing in significant roles include Virendra Saxena, Akhilendra Mishra, Apoorva Arora, Akashdeep Arora, Rajeev Kumar and Kashvi Grover.

The production team says the project draws inspiration from research and publications by several authors. The film has also completed the censor certification process, according to the information provided by the production.

Prashant Singhania, a former civil servant, is associated with the project as Creative Advisor. He believes that revisiting Netaji’s ideals can help bring renewed attention to the revolutionary leader’s vision for India and inspire younger generations to engage with questions of national history and identity.

An investigation spanning decades
The film’s storyline follows two individuals whose determination to uncover the truth connects different generations. One is a researcher who has reportedly devoted more than 20 years to investigating the mystery, pursuing leads largely on his own. The other is a young woman driven by a desire to examine historical accounts and understand what may remain unexplained.

Their parallel journeys form the narrative’s emotional core, exploring the persistence required to investigate difficult questions and the challenges of confronting competing versions of the past.

Rajesh Gupta’s previous work
The project adds to director Rajesh Gupta’s filmmaking portfolio, which includes the short films Chaddi Buddies and The Flat. According to the production information, the two films collectively received 12 awards.

His Hindi feature Unlock Zindagi, released in 2022, was selected for 13 international film festivals and received Best Narrative Feature Film awards at festivals in Milan, Mexico and Boston.

Reflecting on the latest project, Gupta said that the film was conceived to encourage audiences to revisit questions that have persisted across generations. He also highlighted the challenges involved in bringing the production to the screening stage, describing the occasion as an important achievement for the team.

Keeping Netaji’s historical legacy in public discussion
Through The Bose Files — Sach Ya Sazish, Real Reels Production seeks to renew public engagement with Netaji’s life, his contribution to India’s freedom movement and the continuing debate surrounding his disappearance.

The film’s release journey highlights the continuing cultural and historical significance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. By combining investigative storytelling with dramatic performances, the production aims to encourage audiences, particularly young people, to explore the available historical accounts and consider the questions that continue to surround his final days.

The special screening at Nandan marks another step in bringing this subject to a wider audience. Its broader appeal lies in the continuing relevance of Netaji’s legacy and the public’s enduring interest in understanding one of the most closely debated episodes in modern Indian history.
